You'll begin early with reserved tickets for the first entrance at the Florence Accademia, where Michelangelo's earth-shattering sculpture of David has been dazzling people for years. You'll learn the story of this statue from your local guide, along with fascinating tales of its tortured creator, Michelangelo Buonarroti, whose unfinished Slaves you'll also get to enjoy. They provide a fantastic insight into the artist's method of sculpting, which he characterized as being more like a reveal than creation. Indeed, the Slaves do look like they've been lurking inside the rock for centuries, just waiting for Michelangelo to release them.
Next it's on through the Piazza del Duomo and past the Florence Baptistery - where all true Florentines were once baptized. There you'll pause to gaze upon bronze doors that Michelangelo himself called the Gates of Paradise.
Enjoy a tour of the Baptistery as well as the Duomo Museum; soak up the atmosphere and familiarize yourself with the awe-inspiring sights within.
Take a moment before you make your way to the Duomo Terrace, where you'll step on the semi-secret platform that will give you an unrivaled view of the great dome of the cathedral. It's truly a moment to remember. The terrace dome broke every rule of architecture when it was built by Filippo Brunelleschi and remains today one of the largest domes in the world, more than 500 years after it was built.
Finally, the cherry on top of this VIP cake; you'll have the option to take a special-entrance Dome climb. While most visitors wait for hours in the long line below, you'll walk right up to the pinnacle of this titanic structure for a jaw-dropping view of Florence and the rolling hills of Tuscany beyond.
We really enjoyed our visit to the Accademia to see David and our tour of the Duomo and Terrace. Alessia did a wonderful job teaching us about David and the history of the Duomo, along with pointing out things we never would have noticed.
We couldn't have had a better guide than Charles - he was excellent. He was able to share his considerable knowledge in an interesting way. His knowledge of David in particular was incredible and he made sure we had time to absorb this wonderful sculpture. It was such a pleasure to have a guide that appeared to love what he was doing. As a side note: at no time was my 80 year old mother discouraged from making the journey to the top of both St Peter's in Rome and the Dome in Florence. In fact the opposite - my mother felt both Julietta and Charles were supportive of her goal (when in London she also climbed St Paul's!).
