Call to mind most fairytales and, at some point, an image of a castle sitting atop a hill will likely surface. Turreted, domed and eye-catching in its colour palette; this elaborate structure is teeming with stories and begging to be explored. In Sintra, this building is known as the Pena Palace. On this tour you will not only explore the park in which it’s housed, tour its surrounding gardens and enjoy the view from its terraces, you will also be given a fully guided tour of its charming interior.
Inside Pena Palace, you’ll enjoy the guided tour before the day’s crowds descend. With your guide leading the way, you’ll have plenty of time to explore and more than enough space to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the building. An example of 19th century Romanticism, it is complete with chandeliers, wall carvings, and an abundance of ornately-designed furniture. Move freely from room to room, and get more than a passing sense of the lives led by those who once called this palace ‘home’. Your tour will come to an end just as the palace begins to fill with other visitors - yet another perfectly-timed moment of the day!
With the memory of the palace interior still fresh in your mind, your guide will lead you to the terraces. Here you will be given the chance to take in truly spectacular views from the terrace, walk the palace walls, admire the building’s wholly unique exterior aesthetic, and maybe even take a photo or two!
Undeniable in their beauty, time spent touring the Pena gardens is time well spent in Sintra. With your guide leading the way, you’ll visit the Valley of the Lakes, and along the way you will see the Temple of the Columns, Camellia Garden, Friar’s Tank, Manueline Chapel, Bird Fountain, and Cold Greenhouse.
Hop aboard a Tuk Tuk for the next stage of the tour. Lush and green, the Sintra Natural Park is home to Sintra National Palace which you will see as you slowly make your way back into Sintra. You’re free to explore Sintra at your own pace from this point or make your way back to Lisbon by train with your return ticket!
