Why take this tour?

Peek beneath the skirts of the Lady Liberty and get the hidden history (both real and imagined) of the iconic statue that wasn't always so, uh, iconic. With special pedestal access and a small group of 20 people or fewer, this tour will have you laughing, crying, and seeing the Statue of Liberty in a whole new light.

How well do you really know Lady Liberty?

Public hangings, angry flocks of seagulls, Elvis doppelgangers, and drunken Frenchmen - all of these make an appearance in the stories you'll hear on this unique experience. No, it's certainly not your grandma's Statue of Liberty tour.

You'll start with a ferry ride out to Liberty Island, as your fun, local guide regales you with the legends about the harbor. Whether or not they all actually happened is a matter of debate, but separating fact from fiction is half the fun.

You'll start with a ferry ride out to Liberty Island, as your fun, local guide regales you with the legends about the harbor. Whether or not they all actually happened is a matter of debate, but separating fact from fiction is half the fun.

Once on Liberty Island you'll use your special-access tickets to get all the way up to the statue pedestal, giving you stunning views of New York Harbor, a visit to the Statue Museum housed inside the pedestal, and a glimpse at the inner workings of Lady Liberty (see - you really will get under her skirt). As you walk, you'll learn the improbable story of a statue that one man wanted to build and no one wanted to keep; a statue that has been used to hawk all sorts of questionable products, but still remains a marvel of modern engineering.

Your Statue of Liberty Tour ends on Liberty Island, but your guide will leave you with ferry passes and tickets to the Ellis Island Museum, which we highly recommend seeing for its poignant exhibits on the history of European immigration to America. It's an extremely well-curated space with interactive displays and lots of reading material, so you'll get a lot from your visit even without a guide.

Joe was a great story teller. Excellent tour!

It was a little pricey for a single ticket though! I did it in order to join my friends who had New York weekly passes. For the value, I think you could charge less. The guide was great!

FAQ

Are visits to the Statue of Liberty ever canceled due to weather?
Our Statue of Liberty tours run rain or shine. The one exception is however that if the coastguard stops water traffic in New York Harbor due to inclement weather, access to the statue is not possible.
Are the hospitals on Ellis Island included on this tour?
No, The old hospitals are not open to the public and have to be booked specially if you want to visit them.
Does this tour include access to the Statue Crown?
No. Unfortunately, tickets for the Statue of Liberty Crown are extremely limited, at only 365 per day, and sell out months in advance. Walks does not provide any tours that include the Statue of Liberty Crown.
What can I bring with me on my Statue of Liberty tour?
Guests will need to pass through airport-style security to enter the Statue of Liberty. Certain items are not permitted inside the Statue and such items will be confiscated and will not be returned. These items include all weapons; scissors, sharp items and tools; face masks or any items designed to conceal the identity of the wearer. Large packages, suitcases and backpacks will also not be allowed on the ferry to Liberty Island. Please be aware that after the ferry, upon arrival at Liberty Island, there is another level of security. If you are carrying a backpack or large bag at this point, you are required to put your bag/s into a locker which cost 0.25 cents and only take quarters (you will not be able to use a dime and a nickle for example). Please be sure to have a quarter in your change for your locker. Other items not allowed inside at this point include food and drink, strollers, tripods, pocket-knives, laptops and tablet keyboards. Visitors are allowed to bring water for drinking inside, once it is in a clear container.
I have mobility issues/use a wheelchair, can I take the Statue of Liberty tour?
Yes! However please note that if your tour includes the Statue Pedestal (which has elevator access) the only part you will NOT be able to visit is a small platform at the very top of the Statue Pedestal.
What's so different about this tour, compared to the other Statue of Liberty tours?
Our Twisted Statue Tour provides you with much of the great facts and information that you will learn on other Statue of Liberty tours but you will also get stories, gossip, and lore that more serious tours leave out. This means you'll be laughing and having fun while also getting the more serious historical angle. Your guide will be helpful and fun and perhaps a tad sarcastic, and there is there is even a quiz at the end with prizes. This tour is especially good for the teenager in your group who doesn’t think they want to do a “stupid Statue tour”. In fact kids in general tend to really enjoy this tour.
