You'll start early on one of the first ferries to Liberty Island, where you'll beat most of the crowds and head straight to meet Lady Liberty. From here, your guide will tell you the improbable story of the Statue's construction, and how it went from New York's most maligned monument to one of her most beloved. You'll also enjoy incredible views over New York Harbor and Lower Manhattan.
Next, you'll cross the harbor to Ellis Island for a touching and intimate look at the history of European immigration in America. Some 12 million Europeans passed through Ellis Island on their way to make new lives in America. Today Ellis Island Museum is a beautiful and often heart-wrenching tribute to their lives and stories.
After the museum, you'll head back to Battery Park and can grab lunch (with recommendations from your guide) before reconvening at St Peter's Chapel to start your 9/11 Memorial tour with another well-versed Walks guide.
It begins by visiting some of the sites that played key roles on that terrible day, including St. Paul's Chapel, and the stunning new Oculus building. With your local guide on hand to tell you the stories behind each site, you'll relive some of the tragedy and heroism of that day, and the strength and dedication it took to rebuild.
When you reach the 9/11 Memorial, you'll spend some time contemplating the Reflecting Pools that sit in the footprint of the Twin Towers; then head over to the Firemen's Memorial to learn how the FDNY put everything on the line to save lives on that fateful day. You'll also see the Survivor Tree, whose improbable story has become symbolic of New York's regeneration since the attacks.
After a day that includes a lot of heart-wrenching stories, you'll end things on a (very) high note with priority entrance One World Observatory tickets. Ask any last questions you have of your guide (they'll leave you here) before skipping lines that often stretch for over an hour.
Once inside, you'll hop in a Sky Pod and shoot up over one hundred floors in just 43 seconds. This elevator isn't just fast though. Universal Studios collaborated on the project to create an incredible simulation of NYC's growth over time, animated on the interior walls of the pod. As you ascend, you'll watch the skyline change from New York's low-rise origins to the incredible skyline we know today.
At the top of the Observatory, you'll step out onto the glassed-in observation deck for stunning, 360-degree views of New York. Visiting on your own you can take your time here, grab a drink, or just marvel at how beautiful New York looks in the evening light.
