Why take this tour?

We’ve designed this Castel Gandolfo tour to give you access to two properties that were once the exclusive domains of the Popes. First, we’ll escort you to the Barberini Garden then head to the Apostolic Palace, which was the summer home of the Popes for hundreds of years. With audio guides at both sites and an expert tour leader to take care of logistics, this is an accessible way to escape the tourist path in Rome and see two of the most impressive properties owned by the Holy See.

Our Castel Gandolfo tour meets you first thing in the morning at Termini station to make sure you get on the right train. Once aboard, one of our friendly, energetic tour leaders will give you a brief introduction to your destination: the town of Castel Gandolfo which sits overlooking the crater lake of an extinct volcano. For 400 years, it hosted the Popes during the hot Roman summer and on this tour you'll see both the gardens and the Apostolic Palace that they built here.

The first stop on our Castel Gandolfo tour is the Barberini Garden, which you’ll explore on an electric train with an official Vatican audio guide. Built on the remains of Emperor Domitian’s palace, the gardens are a mix of Roman ruins and verdant terraces filled with geometric flower beds framed by Cedars, Cypress, and Holm Oaks - a favorite of John Paul II. Soak up the breathtaking views across to Lake Albano and admire the lush floral compositions surrounding you.

After the gardens, we’ll escort you to the Apostolic Palace. As you explore its interior with an official Vatican audio guide, you’ll see beautiful architecture by Carlo Maderno, portraits of past Popes, and real examples of some of their most vibrant ceremonial garb.

Castel Gandolfo is one of the most beautiful towns in the region so we are giving you some free time to explore it on your own. After getting some tips and recommendations from your tour leader, you can grab some lunch, hang out in the main square, or take some pictures of the dramatic lake views.

Finally, our Castel Gandolfo tour includes a flexible return train ticket to Rome, so you can head back with your guide or stay on and explore more at your leisure.

We have been to Rome on many occasions and this trip we wanted to do something different. We enjoyed the Barberini Garden and the Pope’s Summer Residence of Castel Gandolfo (summer home of the Popes for hundreds of years). There were no crowds and we enjoyed all of the beautiful details as we discovered the inside of Castel Gandolfo. There was so much history to soak up. Our audio guides were easy to follow and the arrangements were all well organized. If you've done all of the must see's in Rome and interested in something new, we suggest you try this out for a relaxing stroll through history.

This tour surpassed our expectations. The Barberini Gardens are so beautiful and a joy to witness up close. I hadn't expected the train ride to Castel Gandolfobe to be a bonus but the day of my travel it was so pleasant with the wonderful views along the way. Thank you for such a great experience.
